WoundSense product is a single-use, sterile, disposable, moisture sensor which is placed on the wound at dressing change. The sensor is read for moisture level using a small, hand-held meter as
required. The moisture scale is easy to use and the clinician will be told that the moisture level lies in one of five categories: Wet, Wet to Moist, Moist, Moist to Dry and Dry
Because the dressing is not disturbed the clinician, having read the moisture level, can take decisions as to the most appropriate time to change the dressing, decide on a change of dressing type or that the wound requires extra moisture if necessary.
WoundSense is suitable for chronic and acute wounds and can be used in hospitals, community clinics and at home. It is not intended for use with burns or grafts.
In telehealth use, a patient or carer can take the moisture reading and text it to the NHS Florence system when prompted by text to do so. Dressing moisture readings are then available to the clinician via a web based log in. Unnecessary home visits for dressing changes can thus be avoided and the patient benefits from reduced trauma of dressing changes, a less disturbed wound bed and better planning for nurse visits at home.
The product is a Class IIa Medical Device under the Medical Devices Directive (MDD) of the EU and has received its CE mark.
The Ohmedics sensor is based on eight years of laboratory and clinical research at the University of Strathclyde where there is expertise in medical device development.
